Makeup for the No Makeup Wearers – Mineral Makeup

I’ve always had problems with makeup. Takes too much time. Doesn’t look like me. And I can’t touch my face.

I’m a face toucher and having all of that stuff on means my face is hands off. The last time I seriously wore makeup was for my wedding. We just celebrated our 11 year anniversary so that tells you how long ago it was. We took pictures before the ceremony and as soon as my husband saw me I broke down bawling. I’m a crier. Also not a good combination for makeup wearers. One of my bridesmaids (God bless her) ran to my rescue with a ton of tissue wherein promptly went all of my makeup. So my pictures are actually makeup free.

Sigh!

So a few years ago my sister said why don’t I try mineral makeup. You know just in case I win some big award and need to fly to Paris to accept it as the ceremony is broadcast internationally. She also mentioned that people with sensitive skin like myself have really enjoyed the mineral makeup.

If you don’t know what mineral makeup is it is supposed to be the barest of all makeups. Made from only the earth’s ground up minerals (don’t quote me on this) and in many cases those with sensitive and problem skin have reported it to have healing properties (again don’t quote me).

The mineral makeup in the simplest form is just loose powder and then some of the companies have added this and that to create some of the makeup products that people are more familiar with. Such as liquid, creams, etc.

I guess really what mineral makeup is, is the actual makeup before all the fillers and gadget ingredients are added. Pure makeup.

Due to my own sensitivities I look for the bare basic ingredients of mica, zinc or iron oxide, and titanium dioxide. Mica being the color, and zinc oxide and titanium dioxide being the slight sunscreens and helping to lighten the micas. Any more than that I have to be very careful and test.

So I went online, my favorite place to shop, and ordered a bunch of sample kits from various mineral makeup companies. Now I had to read ingredients carefully because of my soy allergy anything with Vitamin in E and soy, and lecithin was off limits.

My first try was Bare Escentuals. They offer a beginning kit but no sample kit so I started with a sample set off of eBay….yes my sister gave me the raised eyebrow look when I told her this. I started with Bare Escentuals just because it was the main one well know at the time. I liked the colors and the instructional video but quickly my skin began to react to the bismuth oxychloride.  Many people do and it’s okay. Just set down the brush and move on.

Back to liking it though. One thing I don’t like about makeup is slapping on a bunch of goop. So the nice thing about mineral makeup was it is just powder and the way the lady is putting it on (in the video) just makes me want to try it too!

Now if you have dry skin, and I do, there can be a few issues with the powdery form of mineral makeup. Sometimes mixing it with a little water or even your moisturizer can combat that. It’s very flexible stuff.

There is the concealer or cover up for those blemishes etc. then your foundation which is really just your skin color powder, and then the color or bronzer blush stuff to give you a bit of a ‘glow’. And finally the finish to top it all off. You can add on from there with eyeshadows, blushes, lipstuff, eyeliner etc but really in my opinion less is more so the less the better.

So moving on…

I then acquired sample sets from Armolaeigh, Canary, and Everyday Minerals. I ended up sticking with the Everyday Minerals because the colors worked best and there were no extra, make me itch and break out chemicals, in the makeup.

Lately I have been browsing around and there are so many more companies offering mineral makeup. Especially for women of color. There are so many neat brands out there.

I’m still not much of a makeup wearer but I’m intrigued to try a couple more sample kits (although I do like you Everyday Minerals)

Now my goal is not to get you to try any one brand but if you have been wanting to try makeup or some more makeup that was not irritating, and easy to put on for the busy mommy then give the mineral makeup a try.

My little tip is to start with mineral makeup companies that…

  1. Have the ingredients you can use
  2. Have the colors that look best for your tone
  3. Offer samples so you can try before you buy. Even if you have to pay a little it is MUCH BETTER than forking out for a full kit.

Some links:

Everyday Minerals: Good colors for many skin colors. Great sample kit to get to know. Just pay shipping

Canary: Nice prices: Colors were a bit too one way or another (but they mixed really well with my Everyday Minerals:

Armolaeigh: Good bright colors for eyeshadows and lipstick and stuff. Reasonably priced

Monave : Great colors for women of all races. The president is Eastern European and Caucasian and wanted to have something for her own olive toned skin.

Jane Iredale: I was going to try this brand at first but all but the basic foundation contained too many ingredients for me. Still people love her.

Earthen Glow: I’m on the edge of picking up some samples from this company. Their rice powder stuff makes me want to try them.

They are soo many more. You can start by checking out these companies and then if you need more just do a search on google saying “mineral makeup”.

Whew!

Have fun!
