Are You Considering a Nail Salon ?
Have you have ever gone for a manicure/pedicure? Recently there have been incidents of infections due to unclean salon instruments. So here are some tips on what to look for in a nail salon.
- Upon first glance, most nail salons look pretty clean. But take a closer look. As you know, most of the instruments used in a nail salon are put into an ultraviolet container. You may also have noticed that merely dunking these tools into a dish of soap and water is not sufficient to rid them of the bacteria which they may carry.
- In addition, pedicures can be just as dangerous especially if the instruments used are not properly cleaned, or the tub in which you place your feet is not disinfected. While it may seem as if these instruments are cleaned before reuse, you may be in for a shock. There have been cases where women have developed fungal and bacteria infections to their fingernails and toenails.
So let’s get to the heart of the matter.
Do you have manicures regularly and have you noticed that after a manicure, your nails tend to break more easily. Of course this requires you to return to the nail salon month after month? The reason for this is that the enamel is worn down during over filing, leaving your fingernails open to breakage. You then need to return; and this process happens over and over again. I’ve over filed at home so I recognize the signs in a salon.
In addition, if you notice that your nails are being poked and prodded more aggressively than usual, it is a disaster waiting to happen. If bleeding occurs, use Neosporin immediately! Carry this with you. The use of alcohol will only exacerbate the problem. Um… I would also suggest moving on to a new salon.
The next time you decide to go for a manicure/pedicure; use vigilance. Determine what is used to clean the instruments if at all, or are they merely put into the ultraviolet case. If you are using a mall salon this should be easy to observe from the salon windows.
Is the tub merely washed with soap and water; if so, this is unacceptable. Do the instruments seem dirty to you; are there traces of cuticle skin on them. Ickola! Move on!
Manicures and pedicures may be relaxing, but it pays to be extra careful when choosing salon.
Next up….Do your own manicure at home.
