Hairstyles and Haircare for the Winter Weather

In winter weather our hair can seem to have a mind of it’s own. The build up of static can cause extreme flyaways and a very unruly appearance.

  1. Make sure you hair is nicely moisturized. Try a hot oil treatment.
  2. Use your hair dryer less often.
  3. If you hair is long enough opt for buns and updos. These will keep your hair out of your face and you can smooth them down with moisturizing gels and pomades.
  4. When you go out of doors keep your precious hair covered. Wear a hat. If you’re concerned about the fibers sucking the moisture out of your hair
  5. In addition to addressing the dryness issue have some styles in your repertoire for just such occasions as winter dryness.

Let’s talk about styles for longer hair for a moment. Updos are not just for parties.

A quick French Twist is so elegant and deceptively easy to do. I used to think you had to go along the back of your head tucking the hair in.  NOT!  Brush all your hair to come together at the crown of your head.  Using your hand (I’m left handed and use my right to do this) grab (ever so gently) this hair, but not tight to the head, and twist it. You don’t want to have a tight hold on your hair all the way to the scalp because you want the hair to twist in on itself along the back of your head.   I usually end up with a little loop at the top which I further twist in so that the hair is all tucked into a seam along the back of my head. Use bobby pins, a comb or your favorite clip to secure. I use a

A French braid is equally as elegant and can be used for shorter and layered hair that may not fit into a bun.  Braid your hair along the back of your head adding sections of your hair as you move down your scalp.

Ah yes! The bun. Placed at the nape of the neck a simple bun can adorn any outfit you throw at it. Sometimes I use the infamous Hairagami to achieve this look and other times I just tuck my hair into a clip after forming a bun.
