Treat Your Hair This Winter and Give Yourself a Hot Oil Treatment

To bring the luster back to your over-treated hair try a hot oil treatment.

You can use many kinds of oils for giving yourself a hot oil treatment but what is especially nice is a hair oil treated with essential oils beneficial to hair.

Start by heating the oil in a cup of hot water. I actually use a former baby bottle warmer for this and it works great as I can have it in the bathroom and whip it out when needed.

Use your hot oil treatment before you shampoo your hair. Even though you will be washing much of the oil out of your hair the benefits will still remain.

Start by placing your bottle of oil in the water in which it will be warmed in. Note that if you do use the baby bottle warmer don’t let it overheat. Baby bottles get comfortable warm in about a minute so check your oil after that and heat until comfortable warm on your skin. We don’t want burns here.

Once the oil is warmed pour about a tablespoon of the warmed oil into the palm of your hand and bring your hands together so that no oil spills out.  Apply the oil to one half of the length of your hair and also massage gently into you scalp.

In case your having a “huh”? moment here oil dissolves oil so the application of oil on your scalp will help in loosening up any caked on sebum up there and when you shampoo it will all run nicely down the drain.

Apply the warm oil in the same manner to the other side of your hair.

You will now want to contain your hair and the oil in something so as not to have drippy hair. There are a number of items you can use for this.

    1. Shower cap - Purchase a cheap shower cap just for giving yourself hot oil treatments.  Wash it out in the sink (with shampoo) when done between uses.
    2. Disposable hair treatments caps – You can find these at your local beauty supply store and they are made for things such as this.
    3. Plastic wrap – Go in your kitchen and rip off a length of plastic wrap. Wrap your hair in it.
Now set your timer for about 15 minutes. When it’s done go and shampoo and condition your hair as normal.

During the winter months it is very nice to give yourself a hot oil treatment about once a month.
